The Waitangi Tribunal is a commission of inquiry established under its own statute, the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975. The Tribunal is supported by Waitangi Tribunal staff, who are employees of the Ministry of Justice. The Tribunal¡¯s staff undertake research into claims, facilitate claims in hearing, assist appointed Tribunals in writing their reports, and provide other services to the Tribunal. We are looking for professionals with a commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi to join our dedicated Wellington based Registrarial team.



This is a great next step for a legal practitioner wanting to apply their skills in a unique environment. Keeping the registration and processing of claims to the Waitangi Tribunal running smoothly is an important job.



As a key member of a professional team your challenge will be to effectively manage the delivery of registrarial services. This means you will not only lead a small team of two Assistant Registrars, but will ensure registrarial services run smoothly – be it through developing and fostering effective working relationships with claimants, legal counsel and other key parties involved in the claims process, or providing advice on legal aid applications, or providing drafting assistance and advice in relation to procedural issues and the claims process.



It¡¯s a rewarding role, one that will fully utilise your experience at a professional legal level where you have interacted with users of court services and counsel. Your skills in technical legal drafting, legal research, critique and analysis will also be critical in supporting your team meet its goals, as will your ability to co-ordinate people to perform tasks within defined timeframes.
