Desktop Support Specialist

Applications are invited for the permanent position of Desktop Support Specialist within the Teaching Facilities department of Information Technology Services.

This department manages the day-to-day operations of the central teaching facilities (Lecture Theatres, Seminar Rooms, Computer Resource Rooms, Audio and Videoconferencing and Access Grid) on the Dunedin, Auckland and Wellington Stadium campuses. It also has Service Level Agreements to manage similar facilities in some departments and Residential Colleges.

The Desktop Support Specialist¡¯s main task, working with two other staff, will be responsible for the efficient and reliable deployment of the University managed Student Desktop on almost one thousand computers, including 33 Macs. This includes packaging much of the specialist software for deployment using the tools provided, currently Novell Zenworks. A second area of responsibility is to develop Mac and PC desktops for use in Lecture Theatres and other teaching facilities.

Applicants should be able to effectively troubleshoot hardware and software problems, and have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Apple MAC OS X operating systems. The successful applicant should be customer service driven and have a willingness to learn and keep technical knowledge up-to-date. The person will have excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical matters in plain English to nontechnical clients, and a commitment to contribute towards a highly reliable teaching environment. Novell Certified Network Administrator (CNA) certification or equivalent qualification (e.g. Microsoft) together with Part A certification as an Electrical Service Technician is essential. They must be able to work independently as well as part of a team. A current driving licence is essential.
